Wherefore Art Thou Romeo?
Romeo and Juliet was played out in a different format when a group visited Provost Public School on Wednesday afternoon. The famous play written by William Shakespeare in approximately 1595 is about love and passion between two young people. Grade 10 students participated in supporting roles in the PPS gym (above). ©Provost News Photo.
Chamber of Commerce Members Unhappy With Thoughts of Alberta Sales Tax
Members of the Provost and District Chamber of Commerce are unhappy with a proposal by the local MLA’s motion in the Alberta Legislature to “urge the government to study the feasibility of eliminating personal income tax in the province and replacing it with a consumption tax.”

MLA Doug Griffith’s motion passed Monday night, in the province’s capital, April 21 by a vote of 24 in favour and 15 against (see PN April 30).

The matter of the MLAs looking into changes to the taxation system in Alberta was brought up by one of the retailers at the noon chamber of commerce meeting on Wednesday, April 30.

Chamber members stated that being so close to the Saskatchewan border, they did not want this tax, which draws in shoppers for a variety of products here. Some also said that they did not want to collect another tax for government.

A letter will be sent to Griffiths expressing opposition to the “consumption tax” investigation with a carbon copy also sent to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB).

There were 16 people at the meeting. The Provost and District Chamber of Commerce has a membership of close to 70.

Another retailer said on Thursday morning that he would rather close his doors before collecting that tax for the provincial government. He too plans to write a letter of opposition to the MLA, Premier Ed Stelmach and also to the NDP (who opposed the move).
