Firemen’s Ball Packs a Full House
 |
Just part of a crowd is shown at the 14th annual Provost Firemen’s Ball at the Provost Recreation and Culture Centre on Saturday night, February 28. Provost Mayor Dirk Brouwer addressed the room noting that “We’re very proud of the fire department that we have . . . the M.D. has supported the fire department with trucks that are second-to-none . . . We should be proud of the individuals, the people that call themselves members of the Provost Fire Department.” M.D. Reeve Darryl Motley adds that the Provost fire department is “an envy to other jurisdictions.” Fire department spokesman Alvin Schultz told The News Monday morning, March 2 that 400 tickets were sold — and oversold with about 440-450 people attending. “It’s amazing. Some things fizzle out over time. It seems to be growing,” says Schultz. “We sold out three weeks ahead of the ball,” in record time, he adds. While the money hasn’t been tallied yet as of press time, he says it went quite well. There were “lots of people and lots of fun; and lots of money raised for sure.” Last year’s ball raked in $148,000, bringing fundraising to date to $978,000 (not including this year’s). The money provides financial aid to local residents affected by unforeseen circumstances like accidents, illness, or other unfortunate events.
