Taking Dinner to Go

A great blue heron flexes its wings for takeoff from a pond just southwest of Provost. In its beak appears to be a bit of food for on the fly. According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology these herons eat nearly anything within striking distance including fish, amphibians, reptiles, small mammals, insects and other birds. Their dagger-like bills can be used to impale larger fish, often shaking them to break or relax sharp spines before gulping them down. The heron’s wingspan reaches 5.5 feet. ©Provost News Photo.
