Some Health Board Reps. Seek Election, Others Appointment

This fall marks the first time that some members of the Health Authority Board for Region 7 will be elected.

Two thirds of the members of each of 17 regional health authority boards will be elected in Alberta while the remainder will be appointed by the Minister of Health and Wellness, Gary Mar within 30 days of the election.

|The chair of each regional board will be appointed from the board members by the minister.

The Provost News contacted several sitting members in this region to ask their intentions.

Ron Israelson of Cadogan said that after being appointed twice to the board, he felt that he should have the support of the community and wants to be elected.

Ed Anderson (current board chair) of Marwayne says he will seek appointment instead of election.

Bonnie Sansregret of Consort was not available for comment but has had nomination papers signed in an attempt to seek an appointed seat.

Maryann Arnold of Minburn will be in a different region when the election is held because of boundary changes. She did not however plan to seek a seat in her new region.

Gloria Bergman of Erskine hopes to be appointed.

R. George Crooker of Vermilion will run in an election.

Norm Dennis of Stettler was not available but his wife believes he is seeking an appointment.

Robert Dueck of Tofield could not be reached.

Keith Griffiths of Coronation could not be reached.

Jeannette Harris of Sedgewick is seeking an appointed seat.

Len Heinemann of Wainwright plans to go for election at this time.

John Hunter of Viking could not be reached.

Larry Johnson of Camrose was undecided.

Maureen Schreiber of Daysland is seeking appointment.

Closing date for nominations for those seeking appointed seats was June 4.
Deadline for nominations for elections is September 17.

Unsuccessful election candidates will not be eligible for appointments.
If fewer candidates for election are nominated than are required the minister may fill the vacancies by appointment, by-election or give “other direction” according to a spokesman for Alberta Health and Wellness speaking by phone in an Edmonton office.

The term for board members is three years.

Election day is October 15, the same as municipal elections.
