Miehle Newspaper Press
This Miehle press shown on the floor of The Provost News in the 1960's
was sold to Cowan Decal in Edmonton who used it for die cutting
decals. Offset printing using a Linocomp 1 for typesetting
was used for the July 18, 1979 edition.

The Miehle newspaper press was installed in early November 1961 and the first paper printed on it at The Provost News came out in that same month.
The previous press, a Wharfedale, was taken out Hallowe'en night of 1961. The old hand fed press was scrapped but the heavy metal bed is still at The News office.
The new Meihle had an automated paper feeder and printed 4 tab pages on one side at a time using lead type. Then the paper still had to be folded with a semi-automatic, hand fed folder. This unit served the newspaper until technoligical change including cold type meant the end of its use in Provost after the July 11, 1979 paper was printed. |
