Winged Giants Drop In
 |
A pair of American white pelicans hang out in the Provost Trout Pond just southwest of the Provost & District Museum on Friday morning, May 15. According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, this is one of the largest North American birds and among the heaviest flying birds (9.9 to 19.8 pounds) in the world. The lab describes them as ‘majestic’ in the air. They use their pouched bills to scoop up fish — and sometimes groups of pelicans work together to herd fish into the shallows for easy feeding. The oldest known bird of this kind was banded in North Dakota, U.S.A. in 1983 and lived to at least 23 years, 6 months old.
