“The Person You Are Will Take You Further
Than Anything You Do in Life”

Former Humboldt Broncos hockey player Ryan Straschnitzki from Calgary speaks to Grades 5 - 12 students, teachers and parents about his experiences overcoming adversity in the Provost Public School gym on Tuesday morning, February 13. Straschnitzki told of when he was younger trying out for hockey teams and not making it. He felt “there was no way to reach my goal” but then asked himself how to keep the dream alive. He began development of a “growth mindset” he told the crowd. At 13 he watched drills online and tried implementing them and over time played at higher calibers. At 16 he made a team and moved away from home. “If you want to make it to the next level you have to make it through some uncomfortable times.” Straschnitzki adds that “I tried my best to show up . . . to improve.” He was eventually traded to the Humboldt Broncos team in Saskatchewan with the mindset he’d succeed in any environment. Straschnitzki heard advice from his coach that ‘The person you are will take you further than anything you do in life.’ Recalling being in a bus crash (April 6, 2018) among teammates “All of a sudden I heard a scream at the front of the bus . . . I see a semi-truck coming from the right side. (Then) everything’s black.” His instinct afterwards was to get up, but couldn’t. “I look in front of me (to see what’s blocking him) and there’s nothing there.” More details in The Provost News dated February 14, 2024. ©Provost News Photo. |
