Experiencing Explosive Experiments
|
Moments after St. Thomas Aquinas School students in Provost are instructed to stand about 10 feet back from this volcanic science experiment, a student removes a lid from a full diet one litre pop bottle set inside a crafted, miniature volcano—the result, a forced projection of fluid several feet into the air. Grade 5 girls working on this project Liana Ramos, Pyper Manning, Ayela Rigor and Farah Brown explained to The News photographer afterwards that by putting Mentos mints into the carbonated beverage, it reacts by producing carbon dioxide—and with the lid on, pressure is increased. This was just one of several volcano experiments and many other projects set up during STA’s first science fair on May 4. The activities are part of Education Week.
