No Motion, No Odour, No Vivid Colour

A fawn, possibly only two hours old lies perfectly still, hidden amid grass near a field as a defence against predators. The tiny deer do not have active scent glands so other animals can not smell them. Meanwhile spots on the fawn’s coat blend into a dappled pattern of light and dark spots spread across the ground as the sunlight falls between nearby leaves and branches beside a bluff of poplar trees—and to a coyote’s or other mammals’ limited colour vision, that makes the brown coat against the green grass very difficult to see. When this youngster grows older and stronger it will lose its spots—but will bolster its protection using speed. More photos, details in The Provost News dated June 9, 2021. ©Provost News Photo.
