Gearing Up for Annual Production
of Estimated 7,300,000 Eggs
|
Egg manager Tom Stahl of the Hughenden Hutterian Brethren Colony walks through a partially completed 21,000 square foot building that will house 20,000 layer chickens when completed, maybe in August. Another similar sized room is on the other side of the wall (to the right). Eggs will be gathered daily and sent on regular shipments for distribution to retail stores, restaurants and fast food operations like McDonald’s Canada for consumption. The colony currently has over 6,000 layer chickens with each chicken usually laying one egg per day (see PN story March 13, 2019). There are 177 commercial egg producers in Alberta, some larger, and some smaller than the current Hughenden operation. Eggs are also being imported from Saskatchewan and Manitoba into Alberta which can’t supply enough eggs for its own use. The Hutterite Colony south west of Hughenden was established in 1973 and has 73 people comprised of 16 families. Secretary of the colony is George Stahl. The colony raises other livestock and farms 10,000 acres including rented land.
