Lions Club Gives Away Cash, Disbands
• Millions of Dollars Were Pumped Back Into Community
The Provost Lions Club is serving no more.

The volunteer group has suffered dwindling membership and held its last meeting on Wednesday night, October 6, giving away almost all of its remaining bank balance before ending the meeting.

“We’re proud of what we did” said one of the few remaining members, Alex Gartner as he referred to the operation of the community-minded volunteer group that was born in 1970.

The peak in membership for the club was in the 1980s when there were 55 men who came out to meetings, operated work parties and did service for the community and area. Since that time there has been a slow erosion of membership. “We can’t get anybody to do anything” says Gartner hinting that very few new members appeared over the years. But he also squarely blames the provincial government for one of the reasons of the demise of the service club. At one time the Lions were operating a bingo in town and clearing $100,000 a year—before the government came in with more rules and bureaucracy—and its own provincial video lottery terminal (VLT) interests that finally forced the end of the fund raiser that was held in the Legion Hall for years. Gartner says the accountability reporting that the government forced on the Lions Club “was disgusting.” That “took all the fun away of being a volunteer.”

The club has raised literally millions of dollars for the community over the years including $350,000 for the new community hall that sits on the east side of town.
