Cougar Spotted in Area
There has been a report of a sighting of a cougar this year south of Cadogan within a few miles of Special Areas No. 4 says Provost Fish and Wildlife officer Lee Robley.
In the 12 and a half years since the officer has been posted hereNovember 1997 “there have been 10 unconfirmed cougar sightings reported to the Provost Fish and Wildlife office.”
He adds that “I believe some of these sightings were reliable and a few old timers have told me there have always been a few cougars around, just as there have been a few bears around over the past number of years. Unconfirmed just means that no tracks were located or other physical evidence found to confirm the sighting.”
No Cougars Released in Area
“Local rumours have Fish and Wildlife releasing anywhere from a handful to 68 cougars in the area. The truth is there have never been cougars released here or anywhere east of Highway 2, and any cougars that are present have found their way here on their own.”
He supplied information that listed recorded human injuries caused by cougars in Alberta. That data shows that from 2000 to 2010 there were four injuries and no fatalities. National Parks information is not included in those statistics and there was one fatality in Banff National Park in 2001, the first fatal cougar attack recorded in Alberta.
By comparison, human fatalities and injuries caused by livestock on farms in Alberta for 2000 to 2009 (2007 unavailable) are recorded as: cattle2,320 injuries and three fatalities; horses 1,629 injuries and eight fatalities. Human fatalities and injuries with involvement of tractors and ATVs on Alberta farms for 2000 to 2009 (2007 unavailable) are recorded as: tractors 471 injuries and 23 fatalities; ATVs 112 injuries and 11 fatalities.
