Jet cars lit up the track and filled the air with white smoke at the drag races that were held at the Provost airport on Saturday and Sunday. Professional drivers of the two jet vehicles were Jim Obalek (of Mission, B.C.) and Steve Cooke. The powerful cars produce 6,000 pounds of thrust which is equal to approximately 12,000 horsepower. In comparison a Mustang GT produces roughly 300 horsepower. The shock and awe producing engines propelled by diesel fuel thrust the automobiles down the runway with tremendous acceleration and speeds reaching 220 to 250 miles per hour in a quarter mile. Obalek said that “mileage is not great” at 140 gallons of fuel per mile. Other photo shows Don Twa in the front passenger seat on Sunday as driver Kato Yamada (behind) gets strapped in. Others also arranged for a ride in this car—hitting approximatley 141 m.p.h. and burning up the quarter mile in just over nine seconds from a standing start. The News photographer was offered a ride and recorded video of it below. ©Provost News Photo.

At the Provost Drag Races

Hundreds Take in Drag Races
One of the organizers of the drag races in town held on Saturday and Sunday, August 14 and 15, Leon DeKoning told The Provost News that he was happy with the event. “Yes it ran really well, the races were setup well.”

There were an estimated 75 cars competing on Saturday and 100 on Sunday.

For fan attendance there were an estimated 700 on Saturday and 900 on Sunday, adds DeKoning.

The Provost and District Agricultural Society sponsored the event at the airport with the help of DeKoning and others.

Competitors came from Manitoba, one from B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan with the powerful jet cars from the United States.

Drivers were “extremely happy” said DeKoning in a telephone interview on Monday, August 16.

One of the drag racers from Leduc, Kato Yamada who has been driving funny cars and dragsters for about three years and race cars since 1992 said on Sunday that Provost was the most popular place for him to take bookings for rides in his special two man car. Proceeds he says went to cancer research for children.

The oldest driver of the weekend who was operating a long dragster against a funny car was reported to have the “best day of my life” while at the Provost drags. He is nearly 70 years old.

Organizers are not planning any major changes for the event which is being planned for next year here.
