Provost Wins First BRHL Championship
With 7-0 Romp on Home Ice
The Provost Blades won the Battle River Hockey League (BRHL) championship series four games to one with a 7-0 win in Game 5 against the Wainwright Rustlers at the Provost Arena on Friday, March 20.
The hometown crowd cheered the Blades to a convincing win as the team captured their first BRHL title since the league began over 50 years ago.
Provost gave Wainwright little room to move from the opening draw as the Blades carried the play for the bulk of the first period.
Derek Werenka opened the scoring for the Blades on the powerplay at 15:55 of the first frame with a shot into a gaping net. Brett Chapman and Shaun Rose assisted on the crucial first goal that pumped the team up.
The same line struck again on another powerplay only a few shifts later as Rose scored from in tight. Werenka and Chapman assisting.
Wainwright was lucky to be down by only two goals after the first period as the shots were 12-3 in favour of the Blades, this doesn’t include a cross-bar that Provost hit.

Provost took several penalties in the second period but that didn’t seem to slow the home team down. The best chance during Wainwright’s powerplay went to Chad Chapman of Provost who was stopped on a shorthanded breakaway that began from his side of centre ice.
Chad Chapman was the only player to score in the second period when he banged in the puck after being left alone in front of the Wainwright net.
With a 3-0 lead to begin the third period, Provost potted four more goals to put the game out of Wainwright’s reach.
Chad Nelson kept the Blades’ momentum going scoring less than four minutes into the final period with Chad Chapman and Wes Ganser assisting.
Brett McInnis proved you’ve got to be good to be lucky and lucky to be good as he scored a fluke goal on a dump-in from centre ice that peaked at no less than 20 feet in the air. The innocent looking “shot” bounced just before the Wainwright goaltender’s crease and into the top corner.
With half a period left to go in the game, the anticipation was building on the home team’s bench.
Trevor Chopek and Werenka with his second of the game rounded out the scoring with goals coming 1:15 minutes apart with five minutes remaining.
Finally it was over and the team poured onto the ice to celebrate.
Blades’ captain Ganser along with assistant captains Sheldon Stempfle, Chad Nelson and Shaun Rose accepted the President’s Cup and let everyone on the team raise it above their head.
Ganser said the winning season started and finished with a “Team effort. Goaltending, defense, offense everything. It was a total team effort.”
