Provost Blades Win Senior ‘A’ Provincials
The Provost Blades have another title to add to an already successful season. The Blades won ‘A’ level provincials in Spirit River on Sunday, March 29 after a 9-0 win over the Brooks Blackhawks. The tournament decided who would be champions at both the ‘A’ level and ‘AA’ level.
Going into the tournament, all eight teams are considered ‘AA’ but are then re-seeded after the first game.
The senior hockey team from Provost lost their first game against the Spirit River Rangers by a score of 7-3. Manager for the Blades, Marty Lawes, said it was a tough game and “they’re a team like Provost. They don’t lose at home.” Lawes estimated the home team had about 800 fans backing them up.
The first game for each team decided which level they would compete for meaning the Blades’ would compete on the ‘A’ side while Spirit River went to the ‘AA’ side, which are two completely different categories.
Provost won the following game against the Onoway Ice Dogs 3-1 in the semi-finals to advance to the ‘A’ final. Forward Chad Nelson was in on every Blades’ goal as he had a goal and two assists in the game.
Provost faced off against the Brooks Blackhawks in the ‘A’ final where Derek Werenka had five points and Nelson had three points as Provost took it handily by a score of 9-0.

The Blades’ only loss of the tournament was to the eventual ‘AA’ champions, the Spirit River Rangers who beat the Grande Prairie Athletics 6-2 to capture the ‘AA’ side.
