Trying to Save the Herd

Helicopter Used as Over 1,300 Deer Shot
• Disease May be Spreading Further in Alberta

Over 1,330 deer north of here have been shot by the province’s Fish and Wildlife branch because of fears that chronic wasting disease (CWD) is spreading further into Alberta.

Information officer with Alberta Sustainable Resource Development, Lyle Fullerton says that a private helicopter was hired to find and help kill deer in the Dilberry Lake Provincial Park, Chauvin and Edgerton areas.

The killing continues with a goal to kill 2,000 deer in the area north of Provost by the end of this month but that may not be achieved before warm weather sets in and the operation is forced to shut down.

The deer being targeted are in three 10 km. wide circles.

Because of mandatory head collections of 3,000 deer from hunters submitted last fall, two new cases of CWD had been discovered in the Chauvin area (one south and one east within 20 kms of the village) and more importantly points out Fullerton, one north and west of Edgerton, showing a spread of the disease farther west into Alberta from Saskatchewan.

Usually 1100 heads are submitted province-wide to check for the disease so the 3,000 head along the border from Cold Lake to near Medicine Hat “is a lot.”

The deer with the disease 20 kms from the border where Fullerton says the infected animals are coming from “is quite a distance in” and there is concern that the CWD is spreading.

By April 15 more will be known about the spread of the disease.
