Family Business Closes After
Nearly Half Century
A business servicing the farming industry in Provost and area since July 1958 has closed.

Schielke Farm Supply’s last day of operation was Wednesday, November 15 on Main Street.

Elmer and Mildred Schielke arrived in Provost 48 years ago and with Don Bertschi operated Schielke and Bertschi in their building where Reel Entertainment now sits.

In 1969 Elmer Schielke bought out Bertschi’s interest and the business was then known as Schielke Equipment.
About 1991 or 1992 there was a move to the east side of Main Street and with that came another name change: Schielke Farm Supply. Elmer passed away on April 19.

On the last afternoon of operation, Mildred Schielke noted that they sold IHC equipment for 27 years and in the early days were selling brand new 914 IH combines for “around $29,000 to $30,000.”

The biggest change for the local business was that machines got bigger and when air seeders appeared on the market they finally stopped selling drills. “Some years Elmer sold 40 or 50 drills” and “many” combines. “Some of them are still working.”

Over the years, IHC sent the loctal couple on company trips with others to Spain, Yugoslavia, Hawaii and Mexico “so we had some good years too.”

Asked how she felt on the last day of the business operation Mildred, at age 81 said “Well, I can’t compete with Mrs. Holt at Bashaw. She’s 91” and is doing what Mildred has been doing since her husband also passed away this spring—still running her farm supply store.

Over the years the local family operation has employed a total of 150 different people.
