17 Year Old to Play in National Volleyball Competitions
A 17 year old St. Thomas Aquinas student, Lia Stang will be competing at the national level in volleyball competition this summer.
Stang, who just finished Grade 11 says she was “shocked at first” when she found out she was to become a player on Team Alberta. “No one knew who I was” she said in an interview, noting that all the other players are from bigger centres like Edmonton, Calgary and Red Deer.
She and her teammates will live and train together in Red Deer this month where they will also take in exhibition games.
The six foot, one inch tall player has been training at home running and lifting weights.
The national competitions will be held in Winnipeg August 27-30 when all provinces will compete in the under 18 girls’ category.
Stang has been playing volleyball since Grade 7 and has had her mother Fran as her coach and later Brent Appel coaching at STA School in Provost.
