The Provost Shooter Midgets baseball club emerged as provincial champions at Cold Lake July 29 - 31 and the team will now advance to Western Canadian Championships at Yorkton, Saskatchewan August 18 – 22.

Here’s how the action played out, in this report by Ted McInnis:
• Provost Shooter Midgets begin Quest for Provincial Title
On Friday, game one saw the Shooters playing the Westlock Legionnaires. As the number one ranked team going into the championship, Provost knew that everyone would be gunning for them. Could they persevere?

The game began with a less than stellar performance as the team committed six errors within the first three innings. Chad Nelson began pitching and got little help as Westlock scored two in the top of the first inning on one hit. In the bottom of the inning with one aboard, Jarvis Smigelski smashed a ball over the center field fence to quickly tie up the game. The second inning saw Westlock score three more runs on one hit but once again Provost tied it up in the bottom of the inning.

Each time that Westlock tried to pull ahead, Provost would come back and tie it up again. Nelson pitched innings while only giving up one earned run. Nelson struck out three before giving way to Brett McInnis who went innings striking out one and allowing two earned runs. Curtis Beaudoin came in in the 6th inning to close the game by striking out three and not allowing an earned run.

Provost blew the game open in the 5th by scoring six runs and never looking back. The final score was 17 – 10. We almost scored another touchdown but we were stopped on the goal line.
Offensively for Provost Smigelski lead the team with five RBI’s with his home run and two singles. McInnis also chipped in with a home run and a single and four RBI’s. Beaudoin had two singles, two doubles and a walk with two RBI’s. Shawn Pilgaard had a single, two doubles and a walk with three RBI’s. Chris Shaw (pickup from Edmonton) had two singles and an RBI as did Garrett Southoff. Chipping in each with a single were Tyler Pilgaard, Landon Olson (pickup from Oyen) and Joel Budd who also had an RBI. Nelson had two walks and was hit by a pitch as he drove in a run and Brad Paice had a couple of walks.
