Former Provost Hockey Player Signs With NHL
Former Provost resident, 21 year old Curtis Glencross has signed a professional hockey contract with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks of the National Hockey League.
He has been playing with the University of Alaska and his father Mel said in a telephone conversation from Red Deer that he and his wife Robins son signed a contract on Wednesday.
The hockey player who spent pretty well his entire minor hockey in Provost for seven or eight years left his studies in management administration and flew immediately to a farm team at Cincinnati, Ohio. The Mighty Ducks did not make the playoffs this season so will remain in Cincinnati the remainder of their season and will be on the ice for playoffs there.
Glencross played Midget hockey in Provost before moving on to play at Brooks, Alberta.
This season he led his Alaska university Seawolves in both goals and points.
He gets a $750,000 (U.S.) signing bonus that he keeps even if he does not play for the Mighty Ducks. His father Mel adds that if he does play for the Mighty Ducks he will earn $600,000 per year for three years, plus bonuses. He was pretty thrilled and flew out last night (Thursday) . . . he didnt want to leave his teammates in Alaska.
Mel told The News that Its quite an accomplishment . . . he was small in Provost but later blossomed stretching up late in Midget action and became stronger and more aggressive. He is six foot one inch and weighs 190 pounds.

Curtis Glencross routinely delivers big checks. Now, he'll also be cashing big checks
The punishing, goal-scoring winger, who just completed his sophomore season at UAA, on Wednesday signed a three-year contract with the NHL's Anaheim Mighty Ducks that will be worth at least $1 million and perhaps as much as $2.55 million.
Only two years ago, Glencross, 21, was a lightly recruited junior hockey player in Brooks, Alberta, who skated for a woeful team, yet competed with a ferocity and passion that captivated UAA assistant coach Jack Kowal. This season, Glencross banged in a team-high 21 goals, helped spearhead the Seawolves' improbable, historic run into the Western Collegiate Hockey Association's Final Five and, as a free agent, attracted the interest of several NHL teams.
And now he's a pro.
This is a dream,' Glencross said late Wednesday afternoon. Unbelievable.
He was speaking by cell phone from the Kinko's at the corner of Northern Lights Boulevard and Lake Otis Parkway, where he signed and faxed back his contract. With him were UAA teammates Lee Green, Spence Gilchrist, Jimmy Dahl and Brent McMann.
It's pretty crazy,' McMann said. We did big things this year, and then big things happened to Curtis.'
College hockey sources said Glencross' deal includes a signing bonus of $750,000. His annual salary will be $600,000 if he plays in the NHL and $90,000 if he plays in the American Hockey League, one step below the NHL. Glencross said he will fly to Cincinnati later this week to play for the Ducks' AHL affiliate there.
Not bad for a guy who Wednesday said he had about $200 in his checking account.
