Official Opening of $4.5 Million Upgrade at PPS Held
A $4 million upgrade and renovation including a new gym at Provost Public School was marked with official opening ceremonies on Monday afternoon, April 28.

Construction began late last June or early July and is virtually complete.

Vice-principal of PPS, Brad Pylypow welcomed everyone at the 2 p.m. opening at the school.

After O’ Canada was sung it was noted that principal Bob Hawriliuk could not be present because he was in California and poor weather conditions in Calgary forced a travel delay.

Several people were introduced including Dale Gregory who brought congratulations from the Town of Provost and Allan Murray from the M.D. He said the gym looks “really impressive” as does the rest of the school.

Board chairman Brent Romanchuk said that Provost Public School needed more space and other renovations since some floors were sloping in the elementary wing. “We’re really please with what we got here.” He paid tribute to staff and students who had to tolerate the project during the school year.

Trustee Ches Spornitz, who has served four and one half years said that when he came on the board it had been recognized that PPS needed work to the building. He called the gym “second to none” in this part of the province and noted that despite arguments over the project “it has all turned out for the better.” He said that STA school was co-operative whenever PPS wanted to use their facilities such as the gym for sports. He also told students to “Be proud of your school and look after it.”

The board of trustees was introduced that afternoon as well.

Superintendent Doug Coffin talked about the patience of students and teachers when the “fine facility” was being put together. He said that it was a financial struggle because not all the money was available up front and that it took some juggling and transfers of funds to put it together. He said that this “is a facility you can be proud of.”

Group 2 Architect spokesman Ray Rogers said that all such renovation projects are difficult and “this was no exception.” He presented a plaque to put in the school.
