School Council Concerned, Calls Public Meeting Over PPS Expansion Plans
Members of the Provost Public School Council are concerned about possible changes to a proposed expansion at PPS and are calling for a public meeting in town on Thursday evening, January 17. Apparent recent developments for a proposed expansion at PPS are calling into question the programming and space needed to adequately facilitate the needs of the future of the Provost Public School curriculum, Provost Public School Council member Paul Murray has said. The Provost Public School Council is concerned about the upcoming plans of the new expansion and the proposed move of CTS (Career Technology Studies) from its existing location back to a location at the school adds Murray. He says that The Buffalo Trail Regional Division No. 28 has decided to relocate the CTS program from the existing CTS Centre (550 m2) back to the school. The CTS program would be placed in the area that is now the band room and the social studies classroom (346 m2)). The band room would then be moved, probably back into the old band classroom on the NE corner of the school, or into a smaller renovated area of the school. Relocating the CTS program back into the school is taking a step back in time, as this was the set-up before the present CTS program. The School Council is concerned about the impact of space on existing programs with this move. A written statement handed to The News reads that Three surveys were taken by the School Council: teacher/staff survey had an 80 percent return with 100 percent not in favor of the CTS move, parent survey had a 29 percent return with 98.5 percent not in favor of the CTS move, student survey had a 100 percent return with 94.08 percent not in favor of the CTS move. Copies of these surveys, results and accompanying comments will be available at the public meeting. The above results were presented at the Buffalo Trail Regional Division No. 28 Board meeting on December 19, 2001 with the Provost Public School Council attending. Buffalo Trail and our representative for Provost decided to proceed with their original plans of moving the CTS. The staff and board of Buffalo Trail Regional Division No. 28, as well as all other interested parties associated with Provost Public School are invited to the January 17 public meeting in the PPS gym (see classified ad for time). The statement also reads that The council feels that this move will not meet the goals that were set forth when an expansion was announced. We feel that this move will still present an overcrowding situation and limit the number of classrooms needed to facilitate student needs. By moving the CTS, the Provost Public School Council feels that this move will make the school program less attractive and will be detrimental in attracting trades people to our community. |
