Chamber Inviting MP, MLA to Regular Office Hours Here

The Provost and District Chamber of Commerce is inviting its elected representatives at the provincial and federal level to set up a satellite office in Provost so people can see them on a regular basis.

The suggestion was passed unanimously to send a letter to M.P. Kevin Sorenson who comes from Killam and to MLA Robert Fischer who lives in Wainwright.

Town council appears to like the idea. Chief administrative officer for the town, Terry Hurlbut told The News that at the town’s latest meeting on Thursday evening, November 8 that the town will offer office space, available free of charge to the MP and MLA when the new town office in town is finished construction.

The chamber of commerce will write both representatives asking for them to seriously consider setting up an office on a monthly basis.

The local chamber of commerce believes that better communication and interaction could result between taxpayers and the MP’s and MLA’s office. It could be set up in the manner much like a visiting lawyer or other professional visits town.

Sorenson had told the News editor when he was in town a year ago (November 17, 2000) and running for M.P. in this area, just before the federal election that he would seriously consider setting up a satellite
office here if elected. News records from the November 22, 2000 edition stated: “If the Alliance candidate becomes the new M.P. he will consider setting up satellite offices in the constituency and says that Provost would be one of the larger centres that he could visit on a regular schedule.”

The chamber believes that the regular office visits can be important to a community the size of Provost because various issues could be brought in person by a range of people—be it issues of tax concerns, elderly, immigration issues, pending legislation or the explanation in person of certain laws or regulations. It is of course much easier for everyone to understand issues face to face rather than via long distances whether it be phone, fax or e-mail, says the chamber.

The chamber plans to suggest for a single morning or single afternoon once a month be set aside for the MLA and MP to help stay in touch with constituents in an effort to better serve them.
