Came from end of pack to win Klondike Race
Flad First in Muddy Chuckwagon Final
Herman Flad of Bodo showed a capacity crowd how to win with the fastest time of the final night at the Klondike Chuckwagon Derby in Edmonton on July 26 to capture the dash for cash by a wagon length.

Flad won the race in the mud soaked track with a time of 1:27.03 while Hugh Sinclair of Grande Prairie trailed him. Third place went to Reg Johnstone of Bashaw.

Flad told The News in a telephone interview the next day that he won the race because “my horses were untouchable — nobody could touch them.”

The Bodo man says that he did not want to run in the muddy conditions. “The soup was out of this world—eight inches deep” and the barrels that they had to drive around were nearly floating in the water.

Local Girl To Participate in World Games Opening Ceremonies
Fifteen year old Daegan Leachman of Provost will be one of many participants at the opening of the World Championships in Athletics in Edmonton this Friday, August 3 at the Commonwealth Stadium.

She has been training in dance and skipping, travelling to Edmonton to practice since April every weekend.

She learned about the chance to participate from her Team Alberta coach.

The girl, who skips with Camrose during the year says “It’s a lot of work, it’s tiring (preparing for the games), but it’s fun.”

There will be about 33 others in her skipping group—one of several activities to take place during the ceremonies that will be televised world-wide.

Leachman moved to dorms on July 27 so she and others can practice from morning until 11 p.m. daily until August 3.
She says that she likes the dance routines better than the skipping pointing out that there is not enough room available to do the proper skipping maneuvers.

She has been skipping since Grade 3 and plans to continue after the games.
