Two tournaments this past weekend, including one here in Provost and another in Eatonia, Sask.
Our tournament came first and we had some pretty hard competition. We had invited Lloydminster, Paradise Valley and Macklin.
The first game was played on Friday night against Paradise Valley.
I remember the time that we ruined their tournament by coming back from a 7-3 deficit and beating them in the final minutes.
Well, it was just ten minutes into the third period and Provost had a 6-3 lead over Paradise Valley.
In less than a minute PV scored two goals to bring it within one with seven minutes remaining in the game.
They then managed to tie it up with four minutes left after some bad Provost plays.
And again they scored with two minutes left to make it a 7-6 game.
We thought we could tie it up in 120 seconds, but it turned out that PV had time to score one more and eliminate our chances for the ‘A’ Final.
The final score was 8-6 for Paradise Valley as they came back from a 6-3 Provost lead with less than ten minutes left in the game.
Did we ever feel depressed. But, we did the same thing to them in their tournament, and we’ve done it to a lot of others.
Provost scoring:
First Period- Holmes (Landmark); Ganser (Stempfle, Adams); McMann (Ganser, Angeltvedt).
Second Period- Stempfle (Holmes).
Third Period- McMann (Stempfle, Angeltvedt); Ganser (McMann, Landmark).
Since we lost our first game we advanced to the ‘B’ Final against Lloydminster, who had earlier lost to Macklin 15-2.
It started off quick when McMann scored one of his four goals just two minutes in, but the momentum died soon.
Stempfle happened to get his first of two with just five minutes remaining in the first.
Then things were looking good as we got off to a quick start in the second, scoring four in a two minute span just minutes in.
And we weren’t done yet. We managed to get two more in before the period was half old.
Provost scored six goals in the second period and Lloyminster scored one. Lloyd had just had their first shot on net halfway through the game.
So far Lloyd had just three shots on net during the two periods. While we had 43 shots and eight goals.
Another five goals in the third helped us to a 13-4 win over Lloyminster and the ‘B’ side winners.
Total shots were 64 to seven in favor of the Provost Pee Wees.
Provost scoring:
First Period- McMann (Ganser); Stempfle (Adams).
Second Period- McMann (Adams); Adams (Stempfle, Rehman); Rehman (unassisted); Ganser (Angeltvedt); Adams (McMann); Stempfle (Adams).
Third Period- McMann (unassisted); Adams (unassisted); Stempfle (Holmes); Angeltvedt (Ganser); Klein (Stempfle).
Lots of points coming from Adams who had three goals and three assists for six points. McMann had four goals and one assist.
The third game of the weekend was in Eatonia, Saskatchewan played on Sunday at 12 noon against Lucky Lake.
This game was one of our best, but still one of our worst played.
We still won. By a fairly large margin, 16-9. But we gave up five goals in the second. I guess that’s okay because we scored 11 in the second.
I don’t even know what to say about this game except that we scored a lot. Ganser, McMann, and Stempfle combined for 10 goals and 7 assists.
There were only two people who didn’t get a goal but that doesn’t mean that they played a bad game. They were Rehman and Specht, who played great games on defense by taking the man out of the play.
Provost scoring:
First Period—Klein (Landmark); McMann (unassisted); McMann (Ganser).
Second Period— McMann (Holmes, Ganser); Landmark (unassisted); Stempfle (McMann); Ganser (unassisted); Stempfle (Holmes, Klein); Ganser (unassisted); Ganser (McMann); Stempfle (Klein); Angeltvedt (McMann); Adams (Stempfle); Stempfle (McMann).
Third Period—Klein (unassisted); Holmes (Klein).
The fourth game of the weekend was against Eatonia, a team we had trouble with in Kindersley.
The first goal of the game was scored by Eatonia, and it just barely squeaked in under Stahl’s blocker after he was deked by an Eatonia player.
But we showed them that we can score too when Stempfle passed it to Holmes, who put it in between the goaltender’s legs.
And McMann scored again a minute later after taking a slapshot from the right face off dot.
And a minute after that Stempfle collected his second assist of the game when he won the faceoff back to Landmark who just blasted it by everybody into the net to make it 3-1.
McMann scored his second of the game just 18 seconds in the second. And then our captain Ganser saw about five inches of space in the top right hand corner, and he put it there with a perfect shot off the crossbar.
Eatonia got two more goals before the period was over and it was a five to three game.
All we had to do was win the period, and we would win the ‘A’ Final.
And we did. We held Eatonia back, and scored four more.
Stempfle got one of his two goals on a lead pass after getting out of the penalty box. He then rushed down all alone to put in his 50th goal of the season. Our leading scorer, McMann, has 87 goals on the season, and he had two goals this game.
We won the game and the tournament with a 9-3 victory over Eatonia.
Provost scoring:
First Period- Holmes (Stempfle, Landmark); McMann (Adams); Landmark (Stempfle).
Second Period- McMann (Adams, Stempfle); Ganser (McMann).
Third Period- Adams (unassisted); Stempfle (Klein); Angeltvedt (Specht); Stempfle (50th) (Holmes, Adams).
We plan to play our final game in Irma against Irma, this Saturday.
