This past Saturday and Sunday we competed in Hanna’s six player tournament. Our first game wasn’t too hard against Crossfield. I have limited time so I will be brief.
Glencross quickly scored on his first rush then Stempfle added two of his own minutes later, one which would turn out to be the game winner.
Crossfield scored both their goals on the Paulgaard, Ganser and Holmes line halfway through the first. These were the first goals against this line in two complete games.
Stahl played a steady game and so did our defense. It was almost perfect that whole day.
Provost scoreboard:
First Period- Glencross (Stempfle); Stempfle (Glencross, Benoit); Stempfle (Benoit); Glencross (Benoit); Stempfle (Landmark).
Second Period- Holmes (Adams); Glencross (Sorby); Paulgaard (Ganser); Stempfle (Glencross).
Third Period- Glencross (Benoit); Benoit (Landmark, Adams); Glencross (Benoit).
We needed to win the second game to get into the ‘A’ Final and we were up against Bashaw.
This was a very similar game but a little more physical I thought.
Paulgaard scored his first hat trick of the season and Benoit scored six of his own and collected four assists, while Glencross added seven points.
The defense played another very physical game to keep the Bashaw players out of our end. The defense combined for five assists.
Holmes and Ganser were getting quite a bit of chances but each only scored once.
Provost scoreboard:
First Period- Paulgaard (Landmark, Benoit); Benoit (Glencross, Stempfle); Paulgaard (Ganser, Holmes); Glencross (Benoit).
Second Period- Paulgaard (Ganser, Moncrieff); Benoit (Glencross, Stempfle); Benoit (Carroll).
Benoit (Moncrieff); Benoit (Glencross, Stempfle); Glencross (Sorby, Benoit); Holmes (Glencross); Ganser (Stempfle, Benoit); Benoit (Glencross, Carroll).
Carroll also got another goal, oops, wrong net. But it wasn’t on purpose.
An entertaining ‘A’ Final game was played Sunday morning. Provost versus Medicine Hat. We kinda thought this would be a tough game.
It was extremely close for the first two periods, every time we would score a goal to go ahead by two, Medicine Hat would score to bring them within one.
Things started off with Paulgaard taking a pass from Holmes in the corner, Paulgaard just walked in and picked the top corner.
Later Holmes, in front of the Medicine Hat net took a pass from Benoit, and he deeked around the goalie and slid it between his legs. Two nothing for Provost.
Medicine Hat scored a while later on a Mark Messier style shot in the far side. The puck just barely got over a sprawling Adams and just got a piece of Stahl’s glove. Almost.
Benoit scored his first of two then Medicine Hat came back and scored just 30 seconds later.
In the second Holmes took the puck out to the edge of the Medicine Hat blueline and shot, everyone thought the goalie had it, but it just popped out from underneath his pads. Ganser and Holmes were there banging away, then finally Ganser just got the puck to trickle over the line. Powerplay goal.
Medicine Hat scored once again to bring them within one.
On another powerplay, Holmes took a pass from Moncrieff and walked in their zone. He threw it out front and Ganser, again, got the puck to barely cross the line. It was 5-3 Provost after two periods.
The third was the best. Actually those first five minutes of the third period was the best.
Provost scored four goals in a two and a half minute span to give them a lead of 9-4.
We each ended up scoring once more and the game was called off due to lack of ref respect by Medicine Hat. The reffing was a little strange I thought. It seemed that he was on their side for the first half of the game, and then he was on our side for the last half. Although Medicine Hat deserved most of theirs toward the end. The calls happened when the play was stopped. Calls like three unsportsmanlike misconducts, a match and a gross were made. When they’d get a penalty they’d just talk some more and get a 10 minute call.
Anyway, the game was called off with less than a minute to go.
Landmark got the Most Valuable Player award with three points in the third period, and the team got the Champions trophy.
Provost scoreboard:
First Period- Paulgaard (Sorby, Holmes); Holmes (Benoit, Ganser); Benoit (Stempfle).
Second Period- Ganser (Holmes); Ganser (Holmes, Moncrieff).
Third Period- Benoit (Sorby, Stempfle); Glencross (Stempfle, Landmark); Stempfle (Benoit, Glencross); Stempfle (Landmark); Landmark (Benoit, Glencross).
Benoit and Stempfle had five points, Holmes four and Ganser and Glencross each had three.
We outscored our opponents 35-10 during this tournament.
