Our second of two regular season meetings against Mannville was held this past Sunday at the Provost arena.
Our first game against Mannville we won 6-4.
We were missing two players, Carroll who’s out on a suspension and Sorby who broke his finger.
The game didn’t start well, we won the face-off but misplayed it, Mannville ended up scoring on one of their first shots just 15 seconds in.
Stempfle almost tied us up when he just missed on the 2-on-1 pass on a nice feed from Glencross.
Stempfle later made up for it and scored the tying goal
The line of Ganser, Paulgaard and Holmes played exceptionally well this game, but only picked up one point between the three of them.
That line almost connected on a nice play when Paulgaard slapped the puck around our end of the ice, Ganser tipped it out perfectly to Holmes who skated down the right side of the ice on a breakaway. He elected to take the slapshot, but it hit the goalie in the head and went wide. Now all we had to do was shoot it nice and low.
We had a fairly good game, getting lucky in our end once in a while.
We scored once more in the first on a late goal by Glencross, who just got it over Mannville’s goalie’s pads.
Heading into the dressing room Provost was leading 2-1.
In the dressing room Ken Deck gave us some more advice “Make a little move, fake the shot and go around them, that goalie will be all up tight after Holmsee’s shot so put it nice and low, he won’t be expecting it.”
Just five minutes into the second period Stempfle scored his second. Then minutes after, Benoit’s shot got just under the goalie and rested on the goal line, Glencross was right there to put the puck home.
Mannville added one more goal before the period was over.
The score doubled after two periods. 4-2.
Provost played a great first ten minutes of the third period, Benoit scored our fifth goal just five minutes in.
Mannville then stormed back and scored one, then two, then three, to tie it 5-5 with less than three minutes remaining in the game.
Our goalie Stahl probably should have had one of those goals but there was quite a few shots that we thought were going to be in for sure. Stahl made at least three great glove saves and stacked the pads to keep out a breakaway shot. Stahl ended up saving 33 shots.
Then from in close Mannville just tipped the puck only about a foot over the goal line. Mannville had regained the lead after about 50 minutes of hockey. Two of the Mannville goals came on the power play.
After applying the pressure heavily in the Mannville zone, Adams came up with the puck at the point. Adams remembering what Ken Deck said, faked the shot around an attempted block and put the puck in between the goalie’s pads on a wrist shot. This all coming with a minute and thirty seconds left.
It sounds strange but both teams came back to tie it at six. Provost’s first tie of the season.
