Was not at game March 21. 10-4 for Kitscoty in our previous meeting. Kitscoty had to come back to tie it.
First game of our Provincial round robin play in Redwater Friday, March 27, and it was hard to believe we lost this game. I would’ve loved to see the shots on net. My estimate would be 40-20 in our favor.
We absolutely outworked Lethbridge but they had a great goalie. We needed perfect shots to get by him, and that’s what we got from Landmark.
Adams found some free ice and skated up on the two Lethbridge defensemen. He ran out of room just inside their blueline so he lightly pushed it over to Landmark who was trailing. Landmark wound up and let one of the hardest, if not the hardest, shots find the corner of the net. I was glad I was at the angle I was or I may not have seen it go in. Power play goal.
Lethbridge tied it up minutes later but Benoit put the puck behind the Lethbridge goalie seconds after on a pass from Glencross. 2-1 for Provost probably because we only had two penalties while Lethbridge had six.
In the second we let in two quick goals which could have been prevented.
We were still pressuring Lethbridge for the majority of the time and it paid off when Glencross had the puck as he walked out from their corner. He could’ve shot but passed it to Holmes instead. Holmes waited for the goalie to go down and he did, Holmes just flipped the puck over him to tie the game at three.
But Lethbridge came back once more and scored with Bishop in the box for a debatable tripping call.
Everything went the same throughout the whole game. We’d put on tremendous pressure and Lethbridge would just turn around and our Stahl would have to come up big.
At the end of two it was 4-3 for Lethbridge.
Each goalie played excellent in the third and there was some close calls at each end.
Halfway through Holmes’ tripping penalty had almost expired when Lethbridge scored to put the score at 5-3.
Just over a minute later Moncrieff picked the corner on a snapshot from the left faceoff dot. A perfect shot to give us some enthusiasm and maybe tie this game up.
In just the last seven and a half minutes we got three penalties. Fortunately we were able to kill two of them off but one Lethbridge goal was quite a bit. Too bad we couldn’t have scored on them either. Final score 6-4 for Lethbridge. I would have liked to play these guys again. I know we could win.
Provost scoreboard:
First Period- Landmark (Adams); Benoit (Glencross, Sorby).
Second Period- Holmes (Glencross, Carroll).
Third Period- Glencross (Stempfle).
Since we lost this one we had almost no chance of advancing to the semi-finals.
We stayed up with them in the first period and I think Edson was lucky to be tied with us after one period. Glencross got the goal just three and a half minutes in.
The tables turned in the second as Edson kept on using this bank of the boards play on us which caught us quite a bit. But Wetzstein bailed us out quite a few times.
The end of the second was just a taste of what was to come in the third.
We were leading three to two but Edson scored three to go ahead 5-3 before intermission.
Moncrieff recieved a slashing major which is worth five minutes. I never saw any of it but I’m assuming he was slashed first.
Edson tacked on four more goals in the third while we got none. 9-3 was the final score. I’d like to play these guys again because now we know their strategy.
Provost scoreboard:
First Period- Glencross.
Second Period- Stempfle (Glencross, Benoit); Benoit (unassissted).
Due to the lack of time remaining and the fact that I have no scoresheet for the next game against Redwater I will write that game up next week along with final point standings.
Highlights of that game were Carroll’s first time as a full time forward and Glencross’s penalty shot. Not to mention the score which was 15-5 for Provost.
I wish we could’ve played every team that was there, and by the way, congratulations to the ‘B’ Provincial Champions the Winnfield Ducks.
