Winning third place in a national newspaper photo competition was The Provost News.
Award winners were announced recently at the offices of the Canadian Community Newspapers Association in Toronto, Ontario.
The competition in this category was for “Best Feature Photo- Circulation up to 3,999.”
First place was awarded to The Labradorian, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Newfoundland (photographer Bonnie Learning). Second place went to The Mountaineer, Rocky Mountain House, Alta. (photographer Sarah Ann Collins) while The Provost News winner was by editor/photographer Rich Holmes.
That photo was taken northeast of Hayter when Holmes was searching for a winter scene to feature on the front of the last paper of 2014 — the Christmas edition. He had taken a picture of the old Joe and Lottie Skinner house years before but when the most recent visit was made a horned owl was resting in an upper window during the daytime.
The photo entry was named ‘Owl be home for Christmas.’
