150 Take in Empress of Ireland Artifacts Display
About 150 people turned up over two days to see artifacts from CPR liner, “Empress of Ireland” that were set up by Marion Kelch of Czar.
Kelch said that she was “very, very happy” with the weekend exhibit in St. Norbert’s Church in the Rosenhem district south east of Provost.
Kelch and her sister Gwen Landry of Brockville, Ont. guarded the $45,000 worth of exhibits by sleeping overnight in the old church building. “It was the best sleep I’ve ever had” said Kelch who took four hours to set up 14 mini-booths in the basement of the heritage site. “Considering the fact that I was sleeping with artifacts from a ship that sank (with a loss of 1,012 passengers in 1914) and that the captain had a “Crippen curse” on him she was happy with the arrangements.
She toured groups through both days with each tour taking about 20 minutes, reciting the history from memory.
There were enough cash donations made to purchase another artifact or two after the showing that drew local visitors and also those from Edmonton, Lethbridge and Saskatchewan.
Kelch told The News that with each presentation it seemed that there was someone in the group who had a connection through a relative to the famous Empress that was sunk in only 14 minutes after colliding with another ship in Quebec.
