Man Gets Life Sentence in Kirriemuir Killing
A man originally charged with murder following the slaying of a fellow farm worker near Kirriemuir has pled guilty to manslaughter and has received a life sentence.
Robert Birdsall, who was 27 years old at the time that Alexander Emile Regnier, 50, was found dead the morning of January 12, 2004 on a farm south east of Kirriemuir pled guilty to the manslaughter charge in Red Deers Court of Queens Bench on May 25. He also received a life prohibition from possessing firearms and ammunition.
Regnier, who was a long-time employee at the farm was found January 12 in the silage storage area of the farm (see PN Jan. 21/04).
The property owners were away on vacation and a relative noticed that cattle had not been fed and there was not much activity at the farm. Police were called and then the body was discovered by the relative when cattle were being fed.
Birdsall and a farm vehicle went missing after the death was reported. Police including those from Red Deer, Consort, Provost and an Edmonton major crimes unit worked at the crime scene.
Birdsall was found near Prince Albert, Sask. and formally charged on March 2, 2004.
