Showing Some Soul
’Tis the Season for Christmas plays and this youngster attending to the crib at the Community of Christ church in Ribstone Sunday morning may have had tired feet—or was just taking a few moments to entertain herself as the show went on. ©Provost News Photo.

Public Input Wanted For New Multi Use Rec. Facility
• Meeting tonight
Plans and ideas for a new multi use indoor recreational facility proposed for Provost are being invited at a public meeting Wednesday night, December 14. Chief administrative officer of the Town of Provost, Terry Hurlbut says that he is hoping that 15 local people will head up a committee.

Hurlbut told The Provost News that the community is expected to raise $1 million and the balance would come from both the Town of Provost and Provost M.D. No. 52.

He says that the cost of such a facility might be in the $4 million to $5 million range. Hurlbut suggested that donations may be solicited from some companies and businesses operating in the area and also hinted that even the name of the building would be for sale. Other suggestions will be sought from the public. Hurlbut is under the impression that the M.D. will put in up to $2 million as will the Town of Provost.

Town councillor Dwayne Chopek is to chair the meeting.

Hurlbut points out that most of the recreation facilities in the community are good except for the aging arena and swimming pool.
Dr. Deon Erasmus of Provost meanwhile says that he would like to see several uses for such an indoor facility for the sake of the health of elderly and young people. He really feels that there should be an indoor walking or running track included and there is “definitely an interest in indoor swimming.” That, he said would be good for a lot of people: “The more we can have in here the better, especially for seniors and kids . . a swimming pool would be super.” The local physician would also appreciate a squash court in the proposed facility that would also tie in with a provincially encouraged “healthy lifestyles program that is being promoted.

The Town of Provost turned down $300,000 a year or so ago because the use of that provincial money had to be used in a building that would have been completed by the end of this month. That $300,000 however was not lost to the community because it’s expected the Provost and District Museum Society and the Bodo Archaeological Society will be able to use those funds for some of their construction plans.
