127 Runners Take in Road Race Here

A record 127 runners took in this year’s annual 10 kilometer and half marathon Provost Road Race held early Sunday morning June 8.

Taking top honours with the fastest time in the 21 kilometer foot race was Bill Perry of Wainwright who said that he is “happy with my time.” He was guessing that his time would be between one hour and 27 minutes or 1 hour and 28 minutes. The stop watch read 1.27.03 when he crossed the line. He was barely breathing hard but said that at the 14 kilometer mark he felt a little stitch in his side but it “wasn’t too bad.” He runs six days per week doing 10 kms. a day and one long run on the weekend. He works in the military as an engineer.

Perry adds that in a couple of weeks he will take part in a 100 km. run at Kananaskis.

First across the line in the female division for the half marathon on Sunday was Liz Nichol also of Wainwright. Her time was 1.32.40. She said right after learning her time after her run that “I feel good.” This was her best time ever. She runs six times per week.

First across the finish line for the men in the 10 km. race was another Wainwright runner, Rob McKinnon whose time was 42 minutes and 6 seconds.

Top female runner in the 10 km. race was Red Deer resident Debbie Hope who says “it feels good to beat last year’s time.” She clocked in at 47.04. She won that event last year with a time of 47.24.38.

Youngest runner of the day was Allie Leachman at age 11 while 64 year old Dirk Brouwer was the oldest runner.

There were 104 runners in the 10K race and 23 in the 21K race.

Organizer Kari Gregory of Calgary was not running again this year because she had an infection in a toe bone. “I may never run it again” Gregory told The News afterwards, partly she says, because she is too busy organizing the race. She is “very happy” with this year’s race and after competing in only one of the last four races, still holds the top female time in the 10 km. race.
