Construction of two new soccer fields in Provost is expected to begin when weather conditions allow.

The go-ahead was given at a meeting held in Provost with the Town and Recreation Board on Wednesday night, said Provost Soccer Club representative Pak Wong, who took part in the meeting and has been pushing for the project.

A new committee has been formed and given the responsibility of turning the plans into reality.

The new group, called the Soccer Field Construction Committee has been given a budget of $125,000 to get the job done. The money comes from the Town of Provost and the M.D. 52 as well as $64,000 from the provincial government.

Wong says that his group is confident that using volunteer labour, the project can be completed on budget.

Serving on the committee with Wong who is chairing it are Norm Benoit also from the soccer club, Dwayne Tofsrud, Richard Dieser and Ken Berry from the Kinsmen Club, and from from the recreation board Mike Dennehy, Jo-Ann Gourlay, Steve Hewson and Dale Gregory.

The key however to getting the job done within the $125,000 allotted will be volunteer help from the community. Canvassing for some donations of services or even cash will be done soon.

Needed in particular will be help with fencing and sprinkler trenching and some installation and as well as building goal posts. “We will have to solicit a lot of community help to bring the costs within the budget and we are confident we can do that” says Wong.

The two new full-size soccer fields will be constructed on the east side of the fairgrounds and west of Highway 899 where the town will keep ownership of the land. Wong adds that he would love to have a permanent washrooms facility built nearby.

Some firms have already stepped forward to help with construction including Ray-Patch Pipeline & Plant Construction as well as Maverick Oilfield Services who also have equipment or manpower to help on the project.
