Local Man Top Lifter at Alberta Jr. Weightlifting Championships
A 19 year old Provost man who entered his first ever competitive weight lifting tournament came home on the weekend with first place in his weight division and also won the best (male) lifter title at the event.

Although there were heavier competitors, Brett Holmes also lifted the most weight of anyone at the tournament. The best lifter is determined by a formula that takes into account a person’s actual body weight and what is successfully lifted—so anyone in any age group is eligible for that award.

He entered the tournament in Edmonton with some of his University of Lethbridge teammates, weighing in at 178.95 pounds—and on his last attempt successfully lifted 258.5 pounds.

There were two events for lifters to compete in—one called the snatch and the other called the clean and jerk. Each competitor had three tries in each event.

The event was held Saturday, December 14 at the Balwin Fitness/Power Training Club.

Juniors is comprised of people 20 years old and under. Some U of L lifters were over that age limit so entered as guests only.

Winners at the provincial event included:
Women:
Zaina Kroschinski (48 kg weight division) of Edmonton first;
Mercedes Olinyk (58 kg weight division) of Edmonton first, and best lifter.
Men:
Shawn Upshall (56 kg weight division) of Edmonton first; Quintin Kroschinski (56 kg weight division) of Edmonton second; Alex Bodganovich (62 kg weight division) of Edmonton first; Brody See (69 kg weight division) of Lethbridge first; Brandon Leitch (77 kg weight division) of Calgary first; Adam McLachlen (77 kg weight division) of Sherwood Park second; Luke Wooldridge (77 kg weight division), guest lifter of Lethbridge; Ryan Musgrove (85 kg weight division), of Edmonton second; Brett Holmes (85 kg weight division), of Lethbridge first, and best lifter. Dale Rauhala (94 kg weight division), guest lifter of Lethbridge; Marc Duggan (94 kg weight division), guest lifter of Lethbridge.

Holmes is eligible to compete in the junior national competition in January in Regina provided he soon competes in a second tournament. One of his coaches, Paul Lefebvre of the U of L said that he qualifies by weight—by lifting 20 kgs. over the entry qualifications.

Holmes said of his weekend provincial wins that he was “very pleased with the my outcome and the U of L team’s overall performance” since he has been seriously lifting Olympic-style for a few months. He adds that he became interested in weight lifting at the Provost Fitness Centre which he calls “well equipped” and urges everyone to “check it out.”
