RCMP Charge Man With Mischief After Graffiti Investigation

Provost RCMP report that they have charged a 20 year old Provost man, Guaran August Highway with two counts of mischief.

The charges were laid on August 22 and are made in connection with the May 1 discovery by Provost residents that the downtown area had been vandalized with spray paint and hate messages.

Approximately 12 buildings and vehicles had been damaged by graffiti.

The investigation is continuing and more charges may result.

Const. Susan Duggan said that “It is unfortunate to see this type of behaviour occurring in our community, but it is encouraging to see members of the community coming forward to help police . . . ”

The Town Office (now since demolished) had the most paint on it with obscenities and graffiti sprayed on the west side and some on the north end of the building.

Other places damaged with the spray paint included The Provost News (front, back and side), Darrell Klein Floorcovering along with a vehicle, Provost Computers,Provost Bakery, the back of garage owned by a woman in her 90s, a young couple’s garage on Main Street, (and two other garages nearby), Gregory’s Funeral Home sign, graffiti on a 52 Street sidewalk from 52 to 51 Avenue as well as some on the paved road. Another person had some paint on the side of a motorhome.

Some people spent part of that May morning trying to clean the paint off of their property while the Town of Provost hired an man with a high pressure sprayer to remove paint off of a sidewalk.

Funny Money Turns Up

A counterfeit Canadian $20 bill has surfaced at Hughenden.

It had been received sometime between Friday, July 13 and Tuesday, July 17 by the Hughenden Golf Association

RCMP say that the suspicious bank note was detected by staff at Hughenden Credit Union after examining the serial number.
