House Burns Near Cadogan

A fire near Cadogan destroyed a house on Thursday afternoon, April 12.

The fire burned one of two houses in a yard owned by Bob Southoff who lives approximately two miles west and two miles south of Cadogan.

Southoff said that a neighbour drove by seeing smoke so called him at 1 p.m. By 1:45 p.m. “there was not much left.”

Coming out of his shop, Southoff saw flames coming out of the house but it was too hot and smokey for him to get in the house to save anything.
He managed to save only four chairs and two propane bottles beside the house. He was also able to get a wrench and turn off the natural gas supply to the house.

His family lived in the house until three years ago when a new house was built nearby.

Forty year old brother Darrell who was living in the house had been away for several days.

Bob says that there were many family heirlooms including two special saddles lost in the blaze. “Stuff like that you can’t replace.” He said that no one was injured and “that’s the main thing.”

He has no idea of the cause of the fire but wondered if it started in the kitchen area because that appeared to be where the fire was hottest when first discovered. He adds that his brother Darrell who has been sick and not working recently lost all of his possessions.
